What are the Florida Keys?
They comprise a chain of islands curving out south and then west for 120 miles from the southern tip of mainland Florida. The major islands are linked by road – the Overseas Highway, US Highway 1 – which crosses 42 bridges over the sea, with the longest bridge just under seven miles long. The Keys are divided into five groups: Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, Lower Keys and Key West. The word “Key” is from the old Spanish word “cayo”, meaning island.
