What are the fees or costs involved in joining a crew?
Sea Scouting is surprisingly inexpensive. As a Sea Scout you pay for your uniform, equipment, ship dues – required by BSA to cover liability and medical insurance – and other personal expenses. In 2009, the fee was $61.00 for first time enrollment. We recommend purchase of the Sea Scout Manual. In addition, obtaining a uniform and insignia is mandatory and falls under the obligation of the crew member to acquire. Because the uniforms are often navy surplus or even current Navy issue, they are quite affordable. The cost is based on the actual cost and passed along to each member. After initial enrollment, membership fees are usually about $50 per year. Activity fees are very reasonable and are also the responsibility of each crew member (for example, the Long Sail cost in 2009 was $20.00 for an entire three-days weekend, including all meals; the three-day white water rafting experience was $108, which covered all meals, transportation, and rafting fees.
