The chair of a department is advised by the Committee on Appointments and Promotions, which is elected from among the tenured faculty of the department (in smaller departments, the CAP is sometimes composed of all tenured faculty). Each department has a CAP document outlining policies and procedures. CAP documents are voted on by departmental faculty and are legally binding.
