What are the facts about Japan culture concerning feet?
When your feet are in shoes and when they`re bare is very important. Feet that have been walking around outside are dirty, and no one ever wears shoes inside a Japanese home. In movies and on TV, you can see that even when the police or paramedics go rushing into a house, they`ll still slip their shoes off at the door. Within the home guests are offered slippers, and even in their own home many people will always wear socks or slippers rather than walk around barefoot. Many businesses, especially Japanese style restaurants that have tatami mat floors, have you take your shoes off. People also remove their shoes before entering changing rooms while clothes shopping. At the school where I work, everyone (students, teachers and guests) takes their shoes off at the door and changes into indoor shoes or slippers, and then everyone has yet another pair of shoes just for wearing in the gym. Many homes and businesses also have special slippers just for the toilet – wearing the toilet slippers
