What are the exemptions of being drafted?
The greatest and most certain exemption at present is that there’s no draft. The only exemptions I recall were, health — if you weren’t physically able to serve as determined by the physicians at the recruiting center, and conscientious objector — one how couldn’t serve for religious reasons. The latter were usually taken anyway, but were placed in a medical/evacuation outfit where they didn’t carry weapons… but went in and extracted the wounded. There were college deferments that one had to apply for each semester (I think) that allowed you a temporary exemption as long as you were in school, making progress to a specific goal, and keeping your grades up. I suppose there were also health deferments, i.e,, if you had just gotten over an illness and couldn’t pass the physical at that time, you could be called back at a later date and reevaluated. But that’s conjecture. I had a college deferment for two years. Then I got my BA. At that time the “options” were: be drafted into the Arm
There are no exemptions in a future draft. They changed the selective service law to remove all exemptions. So now, if you are a college student, you can be extemped, to the end of the current semester. That’s all, after the semester is over with, you have to go. If you have a parent or sibling who was killed in the line of duty, you can ask for an exemption. Thats it, there are no other extemptions.
I’m not positive of the exemptions of being drafted but I’m sure they would be along the same lines as the requirements to join the military willingly. There is a Height/weight Maximum and minimum. If you don’t meet those you cant join. There are many medical reasons one would not be able to join an example being Asthma, exema, any skin conditions. Criminal Past. Bad Credit. All of these things play a role in joining the military. I just joined the Air Force, and had to go through loops due to my bad credit rating.
