What Are the Ethical and Legal Issues Facing Teacher?
In this chapter of Those Who Can, Teach, the authors discuss the ethical and legal issues facing teachers. It is the teacher’s responsibility to convey these morals on to their students (pg. 218). In order to be ethical, one must appreciate moral deliberation, display empathy for their students, have knowledge of ethical issues, be able to reason on an issue, have courage to stand behind what one believes, and have good interpersonal skills (pg. 220). The author also discusses some ethical issues that teachers can be faced with. They go on to describe two case studies that display ethical issues and what the teachers did to overcome their problems. There are three ways teachers ethically influence their students. First is by personal example, second is by creating a beneficial classroom climate, and last is by the ethical dialogue in which they use (pg. 223). Two types of due process are mentioned. Substantive due process which has to so with the issue itself and procedural due process
