What are the environmental requirements for VMotion?
In order to use VMotion on a virtual machine between two ESX Servers, both ESX Servers must have access to the same VMFS volume on a SAN, and the virtual machine’s entire disk, including it’s boot drive, must be stored on the VMFS volume. VMotion cannot be supported if the VM’s disk is stored locally or on a raw disk volume. Additionally, both the source and target CPUs must be of the same CPU family. For example, you could use VMotion to move a virtual machine between two P4 servers, or two P3 servers, but not from a P3 server to a P4 server. CPU speed and type (i.e., Xeon, Celeron), as well as underlying hardware vendor and devices may be heterogeneous. The VM must be able to access the same subnets from the target ESX Server as it can from the source. VMotion also requires a Gigabit Ethernet network between the ESX Servers. The best practice is to deploy a dedicated Gigabit Ethernet network for VMotion operations.
