What are the environmental benefits from recycling metal?
Both steel and aluminium use large amounts of energy when first produced. Recycling uses less energy than making new metal – about 70% saving for steel and up to 95% for aluminium. Aluminium uses so much electricity in its production that scrap aluminium is very valuable and high recycling levels are achieved. Recycling also means less new materials being mined and space saved in landfill sites.
