I am presuming you are talking about personality disorders, in particular antisocial personality disorder and borderline personality disorder. These are probably some of the best known disorders of emotional de-regulation. While most psychiatrists and psychologists do not consider personality disorders to be an actual mental illness, the WHO does classify both of these disorders as severe mental illnesses. Either way they are classified as mental health issues regardless. Personality disorders are a psychological condition whereby treatment is given by way of therapy and counseling rather than by medication. Having said that most people with personality disorders do take medication, but this is to regulate the symptoms of the disorder (such as mood swings, depression and suicidality) rather than the disorder itself. What seems them different from mental illnesses is that mental illness usually has an organic cause (ie a chemical change in the brain) which causes the illness to occur. F
