The phrase integrated development environment is also abbreviated as IDE. It is also known as an integrated design environment or an integrated debugging environment. It is defined as a type of computer software program which basically assists a person who works in the field of computer programming in the development of software programs. An integrated development environment basically consists of three elements. It comprises a source code editor, a compiler and/or an editor and tools which facilitate the process of build-animation. It usually consists of a fourth element as well, which is known as a debugger. It also sometimes has a version control system and there may also be various types of tools which are used for the purpose of constructing a graphical user interface, which is also abbreviated as a GUI. Class browsers, object inspectors and class hierarchy diagrams are also important elements which constitute an integrated development environment.
