What are the effects of using fossil fuels?
The idea of sustainable energy is seen as a 20th-century concept. In KS3 and 4, pupils are taught about the effects of the Industrial Revolution in terms of both pollution and the fact that it was fuelled by the expanding use of carbon fuels. Pupils are asked to evaluate the effect of the growth of the coal industry on urban development, social deprivation and traditional industries. The rising levels of pollution, failing public health and the depletion of a finite resource clearly demonstrate the effects of dependence on a non-sustainable energy source.
