What are the effects of smoking marijuana while breastfeeding?
I don’t think there have been any (adverse) documented effects. It is a plant after all, naturally occuring. Unnatural/processed drugs (methamphetamine, crack cocaine) have been known to cause infant death. I’m pretty sure marijuana is harmless. I am not encouraging the activity, but if a woman is breastfeeding her child and toking up, I still think her baby will be healthier than if she wasn’t breastfeeding at all. Now obviously, she shouldn’t smoke in the same room as the smoke in any form could be harmful to a baby. Could you suggest she ingest it instead? It’s actually the best way to use marijuana without danger of carcinogens entering the body. However, there is also the possibility of other drugs being present in the marijuana – for example, marijuana may be contaminated or laced with cocaine or even formaldehyde… If she’s going to smoke/ingest it, maybe she should just use homegrown. When I was breastfeeding my kids I was afraid to take my allergy medicine because I didn’t want it to harm my kids. I think that pot is bad for you just as cigarettes are. Poor baby mom needs to stop before she causes if she already hasn’t caused damage to baby. Did she smoke during her pregnancy? It is a shame to do that to an innocent baby.
