Positive was that people were reckoned to be far healthier than they are now, or were before the war. It was probably the first toime that the government had looked seriously at the national diet. With restrictions on saturated fat and sugar and organic home grown produce, there was little obesity, diabetes or cardiac disease, as we know them today. People learened how to garden as parks and backyards were dug up for growing crops to supplement rations. Designers had to be creative with clothing for example as material was in short supply. There was a feeling for most that the system was fair – and that for some people in the days before the welfare state it was a positive improvement. Negatively there was the effect on morale. Some classes at least were used to having exotic fruits and so forth from the empire.
