What are the effects of oxycodone on fetus?
At this point, the only known side effect of oxycodone on a fetus is the potential for withdrawal once the baby is born. There is a chance of respiratory depression in the baby as well. Because there have been no controlled studies of this drug on pregnant women, the exact side effects are unknown. The only definitive source I could find for this topic was Mosby’s drug reference pages; they state that there have been no side effects detected in animal-fetus studies (mainly on pregnant lambs). They do, however, go on to say that withdrawal and respiratory depression are possible. If you must use this medication while pregnant, please be responsible with it. Take it only when you need it and do not let yourself become abusive of it. Talk to your doctor about it and come to a decision together. Most MDs will base their decision on if the benefits of the drug for the mother will outweigh any risk to the fetus.
