What are the effects of nitrogen dioxide?
Long-term exposure to nitrogen dioxide may affect lung function and may enhance the response to allergens in sensitised individuals. Nitrogen dioxide also contributes to the formation of ozone and of secondary particles. It is also implicated in damage to vegetation. However, the limits (objectives) used in the UK are set at levels thought to be well below those at which these effects become important.
