What are the effects of labeling & stereotyping people?
Labeling and stereotyping are two different things. “Labeling theory” is part of “social deviance theory” in sociology. It refers to the idea that, by giving a label to a person, we give that person PERMISSION to fulfill the label. Thus “my little juvenile delinquent!” gives a name to the child that the child then acts to fulfill. (Because Daddy knows best, and if HE thinks that’s what I am, I shall trust him and become what he says.) Don’t be surprised if the emerging JD goes on to criminal activities and lands in prison. Or “She’s Daddy’s little Princess” allows a little girl to find out what a princess is like (including that a princess is treated special and gets what she wants!) and then behave like a princess.
