Caffeine has both positive and negative effects on performance. In fact in extreme quantities is banned in some sporting events. Caffeine increases the heart rate therefore speeds up the metabolism, it has been recommend a cup of coffee before exercise will in fact enhance performance. However caffeine in large quantities is also a diuretic, which will cause you to loose fluid quicker, which can lead to dehydration and therefore have detrimental effects to exercise.
