What are the earliest possible symptoms of pregnancy?
The typical symptoms of pregnancy vary between women in terms of both timing of onset and severity, so there is no particular symptom which reliably indicates that you are pregnant. Breast symptoms can start quite early, within 4 weeks from the first day of the last menstrual period (LMP). Pregnancy can lead to tingling, tenderness or a feeling of heaviness. The breasts enlarge quite rapidly in the first eight weeks of pregnancy, mainly due to increased blood flow. Nausea and vomiting starts typically between 4 and 8 weeks from LMP and although it can be distressing, rarely leads to problems with nutritional status. Treatment is not usually necessary and advice is usually to avoid foods which trigger the symptoms and to take frequent, small meals. Interestingly, women who report nausea and vomiting during pregnancy have a reduced risk of miscarriage.
