What are the duties/responsibilities of volleyball officials?
The first referee R1 is on the stand. The R1 has complete control of the match and can overrule anyone. The primary duties of the R1 are the ball handling calls and discipline. The second referee R2 is on the floor in front of the benches. The R2 controls everything on the bench side of the court. The time outs, substitutions and questions from the benches are the duties of the R2. The R2 mainly watches the area between the 3 meter lines (10 foot lines) and the net. Their is probably going to be a third referee in NCAA D1 playoff matches. They are going to reverse the court assignments for TV and playoffs. The R1 is going to be on the bench side of the court and still call ball handling. The R2 is going to watch between the 3 meter lines. The third referee will sit behind the R1 and handle subs and questions from the benches. I have not heard if this is official yet, but it probably will be.
