According to Code of Iowa Chapter 9E, a notarial act in the state of Iowa includes, but is not limited to: taking an acknowledgement; administering an oath or affirmation; taking verification upon oath or affirmation; witnessing or attesting a signature; certifying or attesting a copy; or noting a protest of a negotiable instrument. An acknowledgement means a declaration by a person that he or she has executed an instrument for the purposes stated in the document. Acknowledgement only requires that the person who signs the document appears before the notary and acknowledges that he or she is the signer and that he or she has signed the document.
