Running Like everything else at this age, keep it simple. Teach the kids which direction to run and what the names of the bases are. This isn’t too much of a stretch for kids used to playing tag with safe bases. Unlike tag, though, they can overrun first and must touch the bases in a certain order. The only other thing for base-running is to learn to look for the 1st and 3rd base coaches to know what to do. Throwing Getting 5 & 6 year olds to understand what you mean when you explain how to throw and then turn that into the actual throw is very difficult for them. Drills that force the muscles to do the job without you explaining it are the target here. For example, a kid is pulling back to throw and then unloads straight into the ground two feet in front of himself. Give him an obstacle to throw over in order to get it to his partner. Set an old lawn chair between the two kids and have them play catch over the chair. Another popular drill is to have the kid take a knee and then throw
