What are the drawbacks to using an ICL32XX device in an existing 5V application?
The typical ICL32XX transmitter Vout is +7V/-6V with a 5V supply while the 5V families typically deliver +/-9V (minimum Vout is +/-5V for either family, and RS-232 minimum levels are +/-3V). Thus, in some noisy environments the 5V devices may perform better. There are no pull-up resistors on the 3V family transmitter inputs. Systems that rely on these pull-ups to set an input level may not be able to substitute ICL32XX devices. If the transmitter input and corresponding output are truly unused, then the only drawback to a floating input is a small Icc increase.
