What are the disadvantages of representational democracy?
Primarily, in its being just another form of embedded power structure whose objectives become increasingly ones of keeping itself in existence regardless of the needs of the society that created it. The disadvantages include the requirement to select candidates from among party adherents, whose allegiance is primarily to the party, not the voters. The requirement to select a representative whose expressed attitudes either are closest to those of the voter, or least opposed to those of the voter, but are unlikely to reflect all the attitudes of a voter and often are in conflict with some of them. To select someone without any assurance that the representative, once elected, will act as promised. Instead of being represented by disinterested individuals, or individuals with interests similar to one’s own, the voter is represented by people whose attitudes, lifestyles and expectations become, if they were not so already, far removed from the voter’s.
