There are lots of advantages to hydroelectric power like it it very environmentally friendly as there are no CO2 emissions. You can use the power for base loading, if its a pumped system you can used the power as and when you need it. The main disadvantage of hydo power is the cost of building the power plant. There are several basic types of hydro power plants the most common type uses a dam or reservoir to supply the water for the turbines. Normally if a dam needs to be build for water supply, then it makes sense to build a power plant at the same time. However the cost is still very high and is the dam is not very deep the head a water will be low and the power output will also be low. The other type of hydro station uses a dam of water on top of a mountain with a hydo plant at the bottom of the mountain.
