The 14 Avenger-class (MCM 1) ships locate, classify, and destroy moored and bottom mines. These relatively large mine countermeasures ships have fiberglass sheathed, wooden hulls to reduce both magnetic and acoustic signatures. All 12 Osprey-class (MHC 51) mine hunters were decommissioned in December 2007.
