What are the different types of weight loss surgeries?
Several weight loss surgeries have been developed over the last few years. We offer two different procedures, Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass and Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding. These procedures are carried out under general anesthesia and can be done through a midline abdominal incision or laparoscopically. Removal of the gallbladder may be included as part of the procedure due to the high incidence of gallstone disease seen with morbid obesity and also seen after significant weight loss. Gastric Bypass Gastric Bypass is the most commonly performed weight loss surgery done in the United States to date. Other names for this procedure include Roux-en-Y gastric bypass or Roux-en-Y gastrojejunal bypass. This is one of the two operations approved by the National Institute of Health (NIH) consensus conference in 1991 for the treatment of morbid obesity.
