What are the different types of treatments available for osteoporosis?

0

There are three fairly simple things a person with osteoporosis can do to decrease further bone loss: 1) Make sure you get enough calcium and vitamin D; 2) do at least 30 minutes of weight-bearing exercise three times a week; and 3) avoid smoking and too much alcohol. There are drugs for osteoporosis that mainly work to decrease bone loss. Bisphosphonates are the types most often used. These drugs are widely given to treat osteoporosis. Other drugs are available if bisphosphonates cause side effects. Estrogen was used to treat osteoporosis, but the risks of giving estrogen (stroke, blood clots, breast cancer) are currently considered too high. Another drug that is similar to estrogen (Raloxifene/Evista)is sometimes used but it can also cause side effects and is not used as often as bisphosphonates.
