Answer I only use the putty type sealant on gas lines that is designed for gas usage, it is in a bottle with a swap tip attached to the cap to apply. There are very few different types of thermocouples and it usually depends on the type of heat exchanger. If the replacement was similar in design to the original, it should work. I would check the flue piping or the chimney, the loud bang could be an indicator the heat exchanger got too hot, also always use a carbon monoxide detector with a fuel burning device.
