Currently, there are two different types of abortion procedures preformed in Canada . Each one is preformed by trained medical professionals at a specialized clinic. A woman can have her choice of a medical or a surgical procedure, as long as she meets the requirements for the procedure she chooses. Each procedure is unique in its own way and may have advantages or disadvantages, depending on the woman. With either the medical or surgical abortion procedures, there are requirements a woman must meet in order to access either one. Medical Abortion: A medical abortion involves using medication to stop the development of the embryo, and cause the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy tissue. Medical abortions may require multiple visits and may take up to, or more than, two weeks to complete.
