Online classes are most commonly run either as extensions of college or university campuses, or as completely virtual writing/instructional communities. An example of the former is Gotham’s NY-based writing program, with major online course offerings at http://www.writingclasses.com; of the latter, Writers on the Net, http://www.writers.com, for whom I teach a class on writing for children. Both kinds of sites typically offer a range of classes across various genres of writing, running for about 8-10 weeks.
