There are five different grades of stainless steel: Austenitic, Ferreitic, Duplex, Martensitic, and Precipitation Hardening. Martensitic grade stainless steel is most commonly used to make surgical instruments and knives. Ferritic grade stainless steel is most commonly used to make automotive exhausts and material handling equipment; this grade is magnetic.
