What are the different colored markings I see painted in the roadway at various locations?
These markings are the result of a statewide program called “Call Before You Dig” (CBYD). When a project is undertaken that involves any level of excavation, the project initiator contacts the CBYD office (800-922-4455) and provides all the details (when, where, purpose, etc.). The CBYD office puts all utility companies on notice regarding the project, requiring them to “mark out” where their utilities are located with respect to the proposed excavation. This alerts the company undertaking the excavation to the possible conflicts that may exist at the area intended to be excavated while also serving to protect the integrity of the various utility systems. Excavations may range from holes for fence posts to large scale digging for sewer construction. Colors are assigned to utilities by type.
