What are the differences in legato modes as found on a sampler?
Assuming you are using a multisampled setup on your sampler… Many samplers can smoothly jump to the new pitch in a legato phrase but they do it by effectively just pitchbending up to it (i.e. changing the sample playback rate). The same as it would sound if you set your pitchbend to a octave and quickly pushed it all the way up to make an octave leap for example. Note that the original lower sample is the sample being played back for both pitches. This method is indeed super smooth (too smooth in my opinion) but it also “munchkinizes” the sample. This method also can be very problematic when an octave glitch occurs with a wind controller causing “munchkinized” sound. Octave glitches are VERY frequent with wind controllers unfortunately. Also many samplers “top out” and can only stretch a sample so far up after which point the pitch cannot go any higher. So long soaring legato lines may not always be possible.
