What are the differences between the types of counts provided on Lynnwood’s Traffic Count page?
Turning Movement – These counts are typically for the PM peak hour only. They show the volume for that hour for every movement at an intersection: Straight Through; Left Turn; or Right Turn. Both signalized and unsignalized intersections can be counted this way. These counts are made by an individual, or two, standing by the road with manual counters. Approach Volumes – These counts are typically made over several days, and show the volume in each lane of traffic approaching an intersection. The “time slices” displayed are usually for every fifteen minutes, although data usually exists for smaller increments. These counts are made by placing electronic detectors on the pavement that count cars in each lane, or by and Advance Black & White Detection camera. Tube Counts– These counts are typically made over several days, and show the volume in each lane of traffic, in two directions, usually at a location between two traffic signals.
