What are the differences between the three major waves of modern feminism?
Wave 1: Suffergettes. Primarily working to gain the vote for women. Wave 2: Post WWII. Women entered the workforce in traditionally male jobs like factory work during WWII since so many men were off fighting the war. When it ended many women didn’t want to go back to their roles as housewives. So wave 2 largely began as workplace issues (right to work, right to be taken seriously there, right to not be subjected to obvious sexual harassment). It moved on to legal issues like property rights, better divorce and domestic violence laws, and the like. Wave 3: It’s never gained clear definition like the 1st 2 waves (IMHO) and many women begin questioning the label Feminist. Some issues include more subtle workplace issues and harassment, like dirty jokes at the water cooler or complimenting a woman’s clothes at work; leveling the “Woman earning 75 cents to the man’s dollar”; breaking in the glass ceiling; The Mommy Track at work, and many issues for poor single mothers.
