Answer The term Episcopal litterally means “pertaining to bishops”. The Episcopal Church is a name taken by Anglican denominations in the United States and Scotland, principaly, that are part of the Anglican Communion. The Anglican Communinion is a worldwide grouping of churches that share a common history and worship with the Church of England. The Church of England developed from the English Reformation of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The worship of the Church of England spread with English settlers throughout the world. Therefore there are Anglican denominations worldwide. In the United States the Episcopal Church USA (also known by the abbreviation TEC) is the Anglican denomination recognized by the Archbishop of Canterbury (the head of the Church of England).
