To date, there have been 3 generations of Dakotas. • GenI: Dakota introduction through 1990. The headlights are a sealed-beam type. “DODGE” is stamped into the tailgate. These are code-named “N-bodies”. • GenII: 1991 through 1996. This generation was a slight body change and in 1992 introduced the Magnum series of engines. The headlights have removable bulbs. After 1992, the “DODGE” lettering on the tailgate is a sticker, not stamped, and there is a third brakelight in the tailgate. Also N-Bodies. • GenIII: 1997 through present. In 1997 the Dakota was completely redesigned. AN-Body.
