What are the differences between taking comprehensive exams and doing a thesis / project options?
Students who have achieved or maintained a GPA up to 3.7 in the program after finishing all the coursework (11 courses total), have a choice of doing the comprehensive exam or a thesis / project to complete the degree. If a student chooses to do the comprehensive exam, he or she needs to take on more course in the program and identify three faculty members who will design either theory, application or methods related questions for the student. Application for the comprehensive exam must be filled out with examiners’ signatures in the first week of the quarter in which the students plans to take the exam. The format of the exam (open book or closed book) is at the discretion of the faculty member. If the student chooses to do a thesis or a project, he or she needs to form a committee of two faculty members from the department, (a third member from outside the department is optional) and will then work on the thesis under the supervision of the thesis or project director.
