What are the differences between story lines and plot lines?
A story line for Rocky is that he goes from being a nobody to a somebody. Because that’s such a deeply rooted issue for many people, Rocky’s story journey is dramatically fulfilling. The plot line for Rocky is that Rocky is a nobody who gets a chance to prove he’s somebody by fighting the heavyweight champion of the world. That makes the story dramatic, and, ultimately, more fulfilling. Imagine, however, a version of Rocky where you don’t find out until late in the film that Rocky wants to be somebody. You have the same sequence of events, but what will be missing is a reason for the audience to feel emotionally or thoughtfully invested in where the story is going. It’s the storyteller’s job to create that investment through the introduction of a story’s promise and its sustained advance toward fulfillment — story line — and dramatic resolution — plot line.
