What are the differences between SDRAM, EDO, FPM/Standard and Parity memory?
SDRAM is a type of 168 pin memory. It is faster than most other memory and is designed specifically for higher-spec Pentiums. EDO can come as 72 pin simms or 168 pin dimms, the latter being the faster. It was originally designed for Pentiums that ran at over 100Mhz as a faster alternative to FPM/Standard. FPM/Standard comes as 72 pin simms and is used in most 486s and slower Pentiums (75s, 90s and some 100s). It is not as fast as EDO, but is faster than 30 pin parity memory. It will work in almost all computers. Parity can come as 30 pin and 72 pin SIMMs. It is required by some older computers and higher end servers as it features error correction. However if the motherboard manual doesn’t specify it then don’t buy it.
