The provisional government was a parliamentary government, whereas the soviet government intoduced by the bolsheviks was a pyramid of soviets from the supreme soviet at the top to local ones at different levels on down. The provisional government had a parliament with a wide spectrum of parties that had won seats. The bolsheviks replaced that with one party. Socialist parties that supported the provisional government were not extreme enough for the bolsheviks, who held that only strict construction of Marxism was acceptable. The provisional government was committed to continuing WWI with the allies. The Bolsheviks’ aim was withdrawing from the war at once, which they did.
