What are the differences between low, medium or high profile implants?
Every breast implant has a certain height and width. For every woman, there is a range of sizes of breast implants which will naturally “fit” the chest size of the individual. The base-diamenter of the breast (length of the breast width) generally dictates how big a woman may go with regard to the size of the breast implant. If the implant is larger than the base diameter of a woman’s breast, the border of the implant may fall into the axilla (armpit) of the individual and this can make a woman look fatter or heavier or “matronly” as one of my patients referred to it. Also, a larger implant on a smaller woman may cause early ptosis or drooping. Since many smaller women desire a larger sized implant, the different profiles in breast implants were developed. For example, given a 400cc implant, the low profile implant may have a 14 cm width. In a high profile implant, the same 400cc implant only has a 12 cm width.
