What are the differences between Initialized Analysis and Uninitialized Analysis?
Initialized analyis means that the analysis fields as produced by the analysis algorithm go through a subsequent initialization step that modifies the fields to satisfy certain balance constraints between the fields. In our case it is the Non-Linear Normal Mode Initialization (NNMI) according to Machenhauer (1977) and Wergen (1987), see also Daley (1992) : Atmospheric Data Analysis for more details, that balances the mass and wind fields simultaneously. They are balanced in such a way as to minimize the gravity wave tendency, Initialized analysis are generally regarded as a “cleaned up” version of analysed fields and maybe more suitable for some calculations. However, be warned that in the tropics the initialization adjustments may be too large e.g. the mass field may be unacceptable for certain diagnostics.
