Human translators provide translation, review, post-editing, and quality assurance functions. They may be located anywhere in the world (or within the organization) and are networked via standard protocols. They are capable of high-quality output, but usually at high cost and long turnaround time. Machine translation systems are fully automatic, pure software systems. They can produce low to medium-quality output, at low cost and very fast turnaround time. It should be noted that the quality of output from an MT system is largely a function of the quality of its lexicons. With proper terminology synthesis and management, production-quality output (requring minimal work from a human reviewer or post-editor) can be achieved.
