What are the differences between a civil union and a marriage?
There is a significant gap in legal protections between a couple that is married and a couple that has a civil union. While same-sex couples who have a civil union receive state-level protections, they do not receive any of the more than 1,000 federal benefits and protections that those who have a marriage receive. Moreover, same-sex couples who have a civil union will not have their relationship recognized in most other states and countries while married couples recognized at the federal level in the United States can be guaranteed of their relationship being legally validated in all other states and countries.
