What are the differences amongst plastic/cosmetic and reconstructive surgery?
“Plastic surgeon,” “cosmetic surgeon,” and “reconstruction surgeon” are terms that are often used interchangeably and can be confusing to most people. Plastic surgeons undergo many years of surgical training and are fully trained in both general surgery and plastic and reconstructive surgery. Plastic surgeons must meet stringent requirements to maintain their practice and are required to pass board examinations in plastic surgery and sometimes other specialties also. Cosmetic surgeons are surgeons (or sometimes even non-surgeons) from really any training background who have an interest in performing cosmetic procedures. These practitioners can be dermatologists, ophthalmologists and sometimes even obstetricians and gynecologists. The training of these physicians is sometimes very good and quite standardized; however, many times the training is done on an individual basis through elective seminars. Not all plastic and reconstructive surgeons concentrate their practice on cosmetic surger
