What are the differences among the 3 Masters degrees offered at EKU?
The Master’s in School Counseling prepares students with a valid Kentucky teaching certificate and one year of teaching experience to become a school counselor at either the elementary level (K-8) or secondary level in Kentucky (5-12). Students without a teaching degree, certificate of teaching experience may also be admitted to the Masters in School Counseling Program. Forty-two states other than Kentucky do not requite teaching certification for experience to be a school counselor and students who want to use the Masters in School Counseling in one of those states should contact the Department of Education in that state to see if they will qualify to be a school counselor in their state. The Master’s in Mental Health Counseling prepares counselors to work in a variety of community agencies, and with certification as a LPCC they may also enter private practice.
