What are the detrimental effects of presence of sulphur in fuel oil?
Sulphur (S) occurs naturally in crude oil and tends to concentrate in the residual fuels. During combustion some of the sulphur is converted to Sulphuric Acid. In Diesel Engines, the possible corrosive action of Sulphuric Acid during the combustion process is counteracted by the use of “quality” Alkaline lubricants. Residual Fuel Oil can have up to 5 %w (S) while Gas-oil rarely exceeds 1 %w and MDO 1,5 %w.
