What are the destructive effects of using too much salt in foods?
Dr. George Obkoya, in his article, Benefits of Sodium, cited 6 grams of salt which is equal to 2,400 milligrams of sodium or 1 teaspoon of salt as the normal amount of salt a person should take per day. In your ‘guesstimate’ of the amount of salt you’ve taken for the day, include the salts you’ve eaten from “hidden salts’ like salted fish, preserved and salted sea shell meat, salted seeds, popcorn, chips and nuts and processed foods such as puddings, cakes, bacon, hot dogs, crackers, breads, fried chicken, ketchup, etc. Take extra care not to eat more than what is needed by the body for doing so will expose you to two risks: 1) It may cause edema which is an accumulation of extracellular fluids especially in conditions such as congestive heart failure and 2) It may cause high blood pressure.
