Monmouth County Fair opens Wednesday By BOBBY OLIVIER • Staff Writer • July 17, 2009 With plenty of food, rides and fun, the 35th annual Monmouth County Fair will be bringing a county together for a five-day summer gathering. Kicking off at 5 p.m. July 22 at East Freehold Park in Freehold Township, the fair will begin with Motorsports Night. NASCAR show cars will be on exhibit during the fair along with a Billy Pauch Racing School sprint car simulator. Also on July 22, there will be a discount on rides, with an $18 fee to ride as much as desired. Opening night fireworks will go off at 9:15 p.m. July 23, the fair will feature a traveling circus show performing at various times throughout the evening as well as the ride discounts. On July 24, Springsteen! Premier tribute to the boss will perform. Also, there will be a barbecue cook off and a childrens’ petting farm. FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP — If Rich Siessel had a microphone in his hand, it must be Monmouth County Fair time. There he was again as the gates opened Wednesday afternoon for the five-day run of the 35th annual fair, hawking 50/50 tickets, raising funds for the Monmouth County Park System, which sponsors the fair along with the county 4-H program. “Fifty-fifty, Friends of the Parks, 50/50 drawing, 6:30 (p.m.),” Siessel, 55, cried out, as he has for the last half-dozen years. “Get those tickets while you can.” Year in and year out, at the fair’s main intersection — where the main path meets the amusement rides, the vendors, and the administrative trailers — an enthusiastic group, wearing yellow Friends of the Parks shirts, sold the raffle tickets. The Friends, formed in 1991, is the nonprofit group of 335 volunteers raising money for projects and programming the park system cannot fund itself, said Maria Wojciechowski, the system’s liaison to the group. The fair’s 35th year will have something for people of all ages. The schedule will include fireworks, a pie-eating contest, a lumberjack show and barbeque competition. Each day will be highlighted with a different theme, including Motor Sports Night, July 22; Circus Night, July 23-24; and Children’s Day, July 25.
